Join the Institute of Medical Systems Bioinformatics (www.ims.bio) and the bAIome Center for Biomedical AI (www.baiome.org) and become part of our dynamic, international, and interdisciplinary team working at the interface of bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, biomedical research, and clinical application.
Our research is based on the analysis of large and complex biomedical datasets, including omics, imaging, spatial, and clinical data. Modern AI-based and data-intensive analysis approaches place high demands on compute, storage, and software infrastructure. A powerful, reliable, and flexible scientific IT infrastructure therefore forms an essential foundation for our research.
In this position, you will work together with our scientists to shape and further develop the technical infrastructure required for modern biomedical research. The focus is on Scientific Computing as well as the design, provision, and maintenance of compute, cluster, storage, and workstation systems.
Your tasks:
- Design, setup, operation, and further development of our scientific Linux-based CPU and GPU compute infrastructure in Kubernetes
- Administration, monitoring, and optimization of compute clusters, including user and resource management, performance analysis, maintenance, automation, backup, and troubleshooting
- Advising researchers on the technical implementation of compute- and data-intensive research projects
- Implementation of IT security, data protection, and research data management requirements in cooperation with the responsible UKE departments
- Planning and technical specification of new infrastructure components as well as selection and procurement of servers, GPU systems, storage, network, and cluster components
- Administration and lifecycle management of scientific workstations and high-performance analysis workstations
- Documentation of systems, processes, and technical standards as well as further development of best practices for our scientific infrastructure
This position is temporary for 2 years due to third-party funding.
Your Profile
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics, Data Science, Computational Science, or a related field, or an equivalent qualification and relevant professional experience
- Very good knowledge of Linux and practical experience in system administration
- Strong hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience in the administration of compute, HPC, or GPU clusters
- Good knowledge of modern server, storage, and network architectures
- Experience with monitoring solutions such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Zabbix, automation tools such as n8n, and the reliable provision of IT and compute services
- Experience in the administration and support of scientific workstations and laptops running Windows, Linux, and macOS
- Good understanding of current hardware architectures and an interest in the planning, selection, and procurement of compute and storage systems
- Ability to understand requirements arising from scientific projects and translate them into robust technical solutions
- Structured, independent, and solution-oriented way of working
- Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for collaborating with bioinformaticians, machine-learning researchers, biologists, clinicians, and technical teams
- Very good command of English and good knowledge of German
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be an advantage:
- Large-scale storage systems and scientific data management
- Identity and access management
- Backup, archiving, and disaster recovery concepts
- IT security and data protection when working with biomedical or clinical research data
- IT environments of a university hospital or comparable medical research institution
