Field of activity

This position (reference number FK03-321/2) is initially to be filled for 5 years from the next possible date. A permanent contract is planned following a positive evaluation.

 

  • Teaching and research in the field of digital medicine and artificial intelligence in ophthalmology
  • Advancing the interoperability and standardisation of ophthalmological data structures with regard to research and patient care (electronic patient records)
  • Developing artificial intelligence models and their scientific evaluation in cooperation with existing structures at the UKE and beyond
  • Scientifically evaluating existing artificial intelligence models and telemedicine approaches in ophthalmology
  • Deeper networking of the Department of Ophthalmology within the existing structures at the UKE (bAIome, Vice-Deanery for Research)
  • Advising physicians, patients and cost bearers on the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence in screening and diagnostic procedures in ophthalmology
  • Planning and implementation of continuing education courses with the relevant ophthalmological societies and professional associations for critical discussion of artificial intelligence in screening, diagnostics and therapy in ophthalmology with the aim of developing guidelines, also with regard to ethical principles
  • Participating in committees at the interface between specialist societies, professional associations and industry to ensure the best possible interoperability in ophthalmic imaging and data exchange
  • Accompanying population-based studies with a focus on ophthalmology in the use of artificial intelligence and digital medicine

Teaching commitments

Teaching load according to the Teaching Obligation Regulation for Hamburg Institutions of Higher Education [LVVO] in its currently valid version. A reduction in the teaching load is governed according to Sections 15 et seq. LVVO.

Recruitment requirements

  • In accordance with Section 15 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act [HmbHG] of 18 July 2001, as amended, including proof of a postdoctoral lecturing qualification or an equivalent scientific qualification
  • Experience in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Proof of specialist qualification in ophthalmology or a master’s degree or equivalent in a science or medical informatics
  • In-depth knowledge and application of multimodal imaging techniques in ophthalmology (e.g. OCT, OCT-A, FAG, AF)
  • In-depth knowledge of the relevant medical informatics data structures in ophthalmology and their processing (e.g. DICOM, HL7, XML, JSON, SQL, proprietary file formats for ophthalmic imaging and data processing)
  • Knowledge of the mathematical fundamentals of artificial intelligence (tensors, linear algebra, analysis, statistics) and the statistical evaluation of AI models

 

Ideally, you will also meet additional criteria:

  • Ability to work with object-oriented programming using modern programming languages
  • Experience in the processing, structuring and evaluation of medical data and image data, as well as in the training of neural networks with a focus on ophthalmology
  • Experience in the structured evaluation of ophthalmological image data and its secure transmission across locations for clinical studies
  • Experience in the planning and implementation of multicentre clinical studies
  • Experience in setting up and leading a scientific working group
  • Ability to combine the pathophysiological fundamentals of ophthalmology and imaging modalities with their artefacts and limitations using medical informatics methods in the context of digital medicine and artificial intelligence
